I just got the DCK290 impact / hammerdrill set and noticed that there is a bit of a burning smell coming from the tool when it's in use. Also noticed the back of the tool gets a little warm to the to the touch very quickly even under no load. Is this normal?

It is a protective coating that need's to burn off. The smell will disappear with each use.

Dewalt uses Frame-Less motor's in the newer model 18v drivers, and 20v max drivers. With the absence of the aluminum can, the motor can breath easier. It allow's the heat to dissipate easier, and faster. Your feeling the heat, because the aluminum can in no longer there holding the heat in.

Interesting thanks, Dewalt has done a good job with these tools. I was looking at the Makita set and while they are comfortable the build quality isnt there, they look and feel like cheap plastic tools compared to the dewalt 20v tools.
