DEWALT® Launches the Industry’s First Impact Clutch™ Accessory Holder that Extends Bit Life by More Than Five Times*

TOWSON, Md. (Nov. 8, 2010) – Today, DEWALT announces the launch of the revolutionary Impact Clutch™ accessory holder (DWHJHLD) that will lead the way to increased fastener and bit life. This patent-pending product is the first of its kind and has been engineered to solve a daily frustration users face in heavy-duty fastening applications on commercial jobsites – bit tip breakage, fastener stripping, and fastener breakage.

“It is not uncommon to see metal framing crews or glaziers drive up to 400–500 screws a day on commercial jobsites,” said Stas’ Kotula, product manager, DEWALT. “In high torque situations, bits often break before they wear, which is a regular frustration experienced by many of our users. To solve this problem, we developed the industry’s first clutch accessory that has been engineered specifically to help reduce bit and fastener damage, increasing the life of the bit. This launch is another proof point of DEWALT’s commitment to its end users and of the time and expertise we put into the development of all of our products.”

By activating in high torque applications such as interior and exterior brace framing, the DWHJHLD reduces stress on the bit and therefore extends bit tip life by more than five times compared to standard DEWALT bit tip holders.

Ideal for framers, glaziers, electricians and other tradesmen who are tasked with heavy-duty fastening applications, the Impact Clutch accessory holder can be used with both impact drivers and screwguns for versatility. Additionally, the sleeve on the clutch moves forward and backward to engage or disengage the clutch, allowing users to turn the clutch on or off as needed.

The DWHJHLD Impact Clutch accessory comes with two Impact Ready® bit tips, and it will be available at independent distributors in March 2011. The product is expected to retail for approximately $17-$20. For more information, please visit: http://dewalt.com/Home.aspx.

Anyone try this yet? It would be cool to see a comparison test and see how many screws this will drive before the bit breaks

I bought one a few months back, pretty much the moment it hit Lowe's shelf. Still has the original #2 impact ready bit in it. I driven well over 500 self-tapping screws into steel beams with it and it's still going strong! I have not done any official test yet, but it works as advertised. You won't see it activate in wood's or plastics, unless your driving 4" screws. It's certainly designed for metal.

interesting, does it reduce torque?  I suppose for big stuff you just wouldn't use this anyway.

It does not reduce torque unless you exceed the clutch tolerance.  Also, it has the ability to disengage the clutch when you need the extra torque, turning it into a regular bit tip extension.

Seems like a good investment, but installing residential cabinets we don't really drill into metal so maybe next time.
