What is the differance between dw and dc series tools?

DC is for DeWalt Cordless, the DW if for corded tools.  DCD is for cordless too.  I am not sure what second D designates, but it is still for cordless.

Not 100% true.  I have two DW056 impact drivers and a DW059 impact wrench.  All are 18V cordless tools.  Plus I have the DW082 plumb bob, DW087 line laser, and DW060 tile laser.  All those are battery powered.

I was wondering because I have a dc988 and a dw988 xrp hammer\drill driver. Both being cordless.

I was under the impression that the DW cordless tools were of the older generation.  But I'm sure there's more to it than that.

You are absolutely correct.  DW was once used on cordless as well.  I am not sure when the DC designation began being used, or when/why they added the DCD, but DC and DCD is now for DeWalt cordless.
