Newbie here and I am having issues with my DC927.  i went to use it the other day to drill through some sheet metal and I wanted to shift to a higher gear to get some speed so the bit didn't grab and tear the material or twist my wrist too bad.  The thing will not shift out of 1st gear.  I feather the trigger hoping it will grab or release to let me shift the transmission but it isn't working for me.  If anyone has a solution aside from the obvious (sending it in) please let me know.  Thanks

take the shell apart.  its not that hard.  and then you can easily see the shifting sleeve around the gear case.

you have to be gentle with the shift piece when you use it.  those parts are not that beefy.

I believe this is very similar by design, if not the exact same transmission.

O.k. took the four screws out so I could remove the front half of the drill.  With that done the shifter sleeve moves freely.  But when I put it back together it's no go.  I am a novice at taking apart these types of tools and I may just have a fear of screwing something up (no pun intended).  Do I need to find a small torx bit and take the whole thing apart?

Figured it out.  The little spring on the top of the transmission that locks it in gear was bent out of shape some how nothing some needle nose couldn't fix.  What type of grease is used throughout the mechanism?  I need to add some more.

A general purpose Lithium grease should work just fine for that application.
