Why can't you charge a new Li-ion battery in an old Nicd charger looks like they prevented it from being plugged into the old charger by putting a standoff tab on it.

Lithium requires a different method for charging. The new yellow chargers have different electronics involved, and can differentiate which battery is on it, and how to charge it.
