So I was looking at specs on the DCD780 vs DCD785 and DCD980 vs DCD985 and was wondering, why would one choose drill only over hammer drill and vice versa?

if I read everything correctly, the specs between each drill and hammer drill  are the same.  The weight on the compact models is listed as only .1 lbs heavier for the hammer drill, and on the full size models, the weights on drill and hammer drill are listed as the same.

So, if specs are the same, and weight is the same.  Why not always get the hammer drill?

Most people do go for the hammerdrill. It's just offered at usually a $20 discount for people who have no use for a hammer function.

Around here Lowes & Home Depot did not have the 20V Max hammer drills when I checked a while ago. Only the non-hammer versions. I bought mine on-line, the difference in price was minimal and I needed hammer action anyway.

Yes  most people go for Hammer Drill because it has  the ability to switch the hammer action off and on as required.It has other benefits as well.It  can penetrate any hard surface within few seconds provided it has enough power backup.
