i have a dc927 hammer drill are they suppose to hammer in all modes?

i believe it only hammers when you set it to hammering by selecting the hammer symbol (you have hammer, drill bit, and screw)... it won't hammer if you squeeze the trigger in mid air though... it only hammers when you push the chuck in.... IOW when drilling on concrete.
